A Fixture Holds the Part While the Aircraft Doesn't

Removing a C-17 main landing gear door means the door has to be supported, carried, set down and refitted — and for most of that sequence the airframe is no longer holding it. That is what the fixture is for.

A door removal is a custody problem before it is a lifting problem. Each stage below names what is carrying the door's weight — and the stages where the answer is "people" are the ones a fixture exists to remove.

Why a fixture and not a stand

A stand carries a person. A fixture carries a part — and has to give it back in the same condition.

That changes what matters: the cradle has to match the door's own contour, the geometry has to align the door back to its hinge line on refit, and nothing about it can mark a surface that flies. It is engineered to the part, which is why it belongs to one aircraft.
